Heat pump installers are working under more scrutiny than most trades right now. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme ties government grant money directly to correct MCS paperwork, the Future Homes Standard is pushing low-carbon heating into new-build specs, and a customer who has just spent several thousand pounds on a heat pump expects the installer to be as organised on paperwork as they were on the survey.
Software can help with the job management side of that. It cannot do the MCS process for you, and it is worth being clear about which UK trade platforms actually try. We checked Checker’s own heating page against its live competitors’ industries and product pages, not just their general marketing copy about “heating,” to see which ones have a genuine heat pump or renewable feature and which are general trade software with nothing built for this vertical.

What does MCS certification actually require from a heat pump installer?
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is the UK’s quality mark for small-scale renewable energy systems, covering solar PV, solar thermal, heat pumps, biomass and battery storage. It sits behind most heat pump grant money, including the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which pays £7,500 towards an air-source or ground-source heat pump, £9,000 for households moving off oil or LPG since 21 July 2026, so most installers doing domestic heat pump work need it whether or not their software has anything to do with it.
Getting certified means naming a Licensee, the person who signs the Installer Agreement and holds ultimate responsibility for meeting scheme requirements, and at least one Technical Supervisor, who signs off that a specific installation meets the relevant MCS Installation Standard. A business can need more than one Technical Supervisor depending on its size and the technologies it installs.
Once certified, the paperwork obligations do not stop. A certificate for each installation must be raised in the MCS Installations Database (MID) within 30 calendar days of the commissioning date. Installation records then need to be kept securely for a minimum of six years, or for as long as the contractual relationship with that customer runs, whichever is longer. None of that is optional, and none of it is something a general job management app performs for you.
5 things heat pump and renewable heating software needs to get right in 2026
Before comparing individual platforms, these are the five things that actually separate genuine heat pump and renewable support from a generic trade app with “heating” in its category list.
Measured against that list, three of the platforms UK trades actually use have something genuinely built for this vertical. The rest are general trade software with no heat pump or renewable-specific feature on their own sites as of the date this was checked.
Commusoft
Commusoft runs a dedicated Renewable Energy section on its site, separate from its general plumbing and heating pages. Its Asset Maintenance feature keeps detailed service records for equipment including geothermal and air source heat pumps, and its mobile app lets a field engineer capture MCS-required data, roof orientation and site photos on the phone during a survey, alongside sales proposals that show a customer their estimated carbon savings and return on investment.
That is real groundwork for the MCS paperwork trail, but it stops short of registration: Commusoft’s own pages describe data capture and asset tracking, not a direct submission into the MCS Installations Database. It is also worth being upfront about who Commusoft is for. The company publishes no self-serve pricing, its sales page routes to a booked call, and its own onboarding copy states plainly that Commusoft is “designed for businesses with 6 or more staff,” which screens out a sole trader or two-person renewable heating outfit before they get as far as a demo.
Checker
Checker’s own heating page is explicitly written to cover more than gas: installation and safety certificates across “gas, oil, or renewables,” plus heat pump service reports and a dedicated heat pump and system maintenance reminder, sitting alongside boiler service reminders rather than being folded into them. That sits inside a full job management and compliance platform: job scheduling, a customer CRM, native invoicing and quoting, digital jobsheets completed on-site, and two-way invoice and payment sync with Xero, plus supported QuickBooks and Sage integrations, all in one subscription with no minimum team size.
Checker does not carry an MCS-specific certificate template, and it has no integration into the MCS Installations Database. An MCS certified installer using Checker still raises and registers that certificate through the standard MCS route, the same as they would with a paper file. It fits best an installer who also does general gas, oil or electrical work and wants one app across the whole book of work. Pricing is flat by plan: Lite at £10.99, Pro at £19.99 and Pro Plus at £25.99, all plus VAT, with no lock-in contract. Only PRO+ sub-users are charged separately at £10.99 per month plus VAT.
Powered Now
Powered Now’s Forms & Certificates library runs to more than 70 templates, and its Renewable Energy category includes a named Heat Pump Commissioning Certificate that a user can fill in, sign and send from a phone or tablet, alongside other renewable documents such as a Solar Thermal Commissioning Checklist. It has a long-standing reputation for working reliably offline, and there is no minimum team size to use it.
The certificate itself is a digital form rather than an MCS Installations Database submission, and Powered Now does not publicly describe a Technical Supervisor sign-off step matching the MCS Operating Scenario. It is also gated: Forms & Certificates, and the Heat Pump Commissioning Certificate with it, is a Professional-plan feature at £32 a month, not included on the entry Business plan at £28.
What about Tradify, BigChange, ServiceM8, Joblogic and simPRO?
These five are all genuine, widely used UK trade platforms, and each was checked live on its own industries or trades pages before being included here. None of them names a heat pump, renewable heating or MCS-specific feature on those pages as of the check date. Tradify’s trades and plumbing pages cover general job scheduling, quoting and invoicing with no mention of heat pumps, renewables or MCS anywhere in the page text. BigChange lists “plumbing, heating and HVAC” as one broad category with no renewable-specific split. ServiceM8’s industries page groups heating under a general HVAC category with the same gap. Joblogic’s own blog covers heat pumps editorially, but its plumbing and heating product pages describe Gas Safe-aligned certificates and F-Gas records rather than anything heat pump or MCS-specific. simPRO’s published industries are electrical, plumbing, HVAC, security and fire protection, again with no dedicated renewable or heat pump vertical.
That does not make them bad software. It means a heat pump or renewable heating installer choosing one of these five is building their MCS paperwork process alongside general trade job management, rather than inside it, the same way they would with most software on the market.
